Product Description

Quick Facts

  • Ceiling grid must be dry and free of dust, oils, and contaminants before installation
  • Cannot be used to conceal seams in direct mount tile installations
  • Made from durable PVC
  • Lasts a lifetime
  • Clean with soap and water
  • Mold and Mildew resistant
  • Stain Resistant
  • Flexible yet strong
  • Lightweight and easy to install

Available in the same variety of colors as our ProLite Tiles, the Decorative Grid Tape is designed to cover the drop-ceiling suspended grid system installations.

Easy to trim to size with household scissors, this tape makes the T-bar disappear, leaving nothing to detract from your new beautifully crafted, custom ceiling.

The adhesive on the back is to aid with installation, and IS NOT a permanent adhesive. Small dabs of tile adhesive should be applied to the back of the tape. Ceiling grid tape should have a small dab of adhesive applied every 6 inches. The adhesive backing will allow for the strip to stick to the ceiling long enough for the tile adhesive to cure. Failure to use tile adhesive may result in the failure of the tape to adhere to the ceiling.

Tile adhesive is available here.

FDA
The ceiling tile meets the criteria for use in Food Areas as outlined by the FDA Food Code 2013 Chapter 6 6-101.11. FDA Food Code 2013

Greenguard
Greenguard Gold Certification offers strict certification criteria that considers safety factors to account for sensitive individuals (such as children and the elderly), and ensures that a product is acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities. It is referenced by both The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Building Rating System. Click here for more information.

UL Listing/Certification
Certain ProLite ceiling tiles are approved drop-out ceiling panels that can be installed beneath fire sprinklers. When exposed to heat from a developing fire, drop-out ceiling panels soften, distort, and fall from the ceiling grid. Heat from the growing fire activates the sprinkler which, unimpeded by the panels, controls or extinguishes the fire. Click here for more information.

Waterproof
Materials used in the construction of the tile(s) are 100% waterproof.

Class A Fire Rated
Tiles have been tested in accordance with ASTM 84e and scored a Class A rating for flame spread and smoke generation.

RETURNS

At ProCeilingTiles.com, we know that projects take a while, and sometimes plans change. That's why, in most cases, we give our customers a 90 day grace period to return products. The products must be unused/new and in their original boxes.

We are unable to replace items have been modified or installed, so please review all the contents of your shipment for damage and to verify that the items received are correct. Damaged items, or items shipped in error, that are not modified will be replaced promptly.

Refund Amount
When returning products to ProCeilingTiles.com the customer is responsible for the shipping cost back to us, and the Actual Shipping cost that we incured while sending you the product. Your refund equation is: (Price for Product + Tax) - (Actual shipping cost) = Your Refund

Example: You paid a total of $ 100 for products from ProCeilingTiles.com. You had used a coupon for free shipping when placing your order. Since shipping isn't truly free for us, the original actual shipping amount is deducted from your refund. So, if actual shipping cost was $ 8.00 (hypothetical cost) and you returned all of the products, you'd receive a refund amount of $ 92.00. If you had paid any sales tax when placing your order (CA and KY residents only) that would also be refunded in full.

Unqualified Products
Custom products do not qualify for a refund if returned. Custom products include, but are not limited to, the Imagination Series and Custom Tile categories.

Partial Returns of Items with Quantity Discounts
In the event that a ProCeilingTiles.com order qualified for and received a quantity discount, special consideration must be taken when accepting a partial return of the specific product that qualified for the quantity discount. If a customer's request to return a specific amount of product breaks the initial quantity required to qualify for a discount, it is possible that the customer will not receive a refund for the returned items to ProCeilingTiles.com. This is because we have extended a generous discount for a bulk buy, which may no longer applicable if a portion of the product is returned.

A refund involving an order that included a quantity discount can be examined in the following example:
Bill purchased 400 of a particular ceiling tile which cost $ 4.25 per tile (a $ 0.74/tile discount when purchasing 400 or more). His order also qualified for free shipping and he was not subject to sales tax. The order total was $ 1700.00.

After Bill finished his project, he decided that he did not need 30 of his tiles, and he wishes to return them. We must treat Bill's order as if he originally purchased 370 ceiling tiles, which means he would have not qualified for the $ 0.74 per tile quantity discount. If Bill had only purchased 370 tiles, the tiles would have cost $ 4.99 per tile and his order total would have been $ 1846.30.

In this particular case, Bill's new order total ($ 1,846.30) would actually be more than what he originally paid ($ 1,700.00). While we wouldn't charge Bill the difference when returning the tiles, we also would not be able to provide any refund. It would be better for Bill to keep the tiles and save on the return shipping.

When and how will a customer be refunded?
If products are returned within 90 days of the purchase, the customer's credit card will be refunded electronically. If products are returned toward the end of the 90 day period, and the refund does not take effect within 90 days of the purchase date, the refund will be issued by check and sent by USPS. Returns may take up to 2 weeks to be processed.

Packaging Items for their Return
Please be careful when packaging items for returns. You will be responsible for damage incured during shipping, so please package the items accordingly. Retain the paper work that the shipping company gives you, especially the tracking number. Remember, you will be responsible for the items until we receive them.

How To Install Drop In Ceiling Tiles

  • Materials: Tools Needed for Installation
  • Ceiling Tiles
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil / Wax Pencil
  • Straight edge
  • Scissors, razor knife, or Ceiling Tile Aviation Snips
  • Gloves
  • Eye Protection

ProLite Series Only-
Insulation Above The Tiles
Our ProLite Series of tiles are our most popular tiles due to their flexibility, color options, and price point. Due to the tiles' thin construction, regular fiberglass insulation is too heavy to lay on top of the tiles. If your space requires insulation above the tiles you have a few options:

Option 1
Our SoniGuard insulation is specifically built and designed to work above our ProLite Series and can be purchased from our website.

Option 2
If your tile design is flat on the back, you can slide these tiles into place under your existing tiles, leaving the existing tiles to bear the weight of your insulation.

Option 3
You can place small furring strips that lay across the top of the grid to use as support for insulation. 1x1 or 1x2 wood strips provide enough support for insulation.

Option 4
You can push your existing tiles up out of place and turn them slightly to rest on top of the grid system. This would allow the insulation to rest on top of these tiles.

Option 5
You can secure the insulation to the "real ceiling" of your space, leaving the tops of the tiles clear of any need to support weight.

All Tiles

Installing
Once you have determined how you tiles will be installed (empty grid, under existing tiles, existing tiles pushed up) it's time to get started. Place all of the full sized tiles first, leaving the border and partial tiles for last. Having all the full sized tiles in place will push the grid into its natural position. If you cut and install border and partial tiles first, you may find that they are the wrong size once all the other tiles are in place.

Border / Partial Tiles
Use a tape measure or straightedge to measure the size your tiles need to be. Transfer those measurements to the back side of the tile with a pencil or grease pencil.

Cutting Tiles
Our ProLite Series is very easy to cut with regular household scissors. Follow your lines for a nice neat finish. You can also use a razor knife if needed.

Lighting
Can Lights / Recessed Lights
In many homes grid mounted lights are very popular. You should choose a tile design that has a large enough flat area for the light bezel to lay flush once installed. You should also choose lights that have grid mounting brackets so that the weight of the light is supported by the grid system and not the tile.

Place your light fixture and tile in the grid system. Adjust the light to its final position and mark this on the backside of your tile. Use the appropriate size template to mark the hole in the tile. Many times the light bezel or a roll of tape will be close to the correct size. Use scissors or a razor knife to cut the opening.

Caution
We do not recommend can light fixtures that are not designed for direct contact with insulation nor do we recommend using halogen lighting. Unshielded fixtures, especially those using halogen lighting represent a risk of fire or melting the tiles.

High Temperature Areas
Our ProLite Series tiles are designed not to be affected by temperatures up to 120F. In some cases there may be localized ceiling and tile temperatures that exceed the tiles designed operating temperature. This can happen around heat registers, above stoves and ovens, around high temperature lighting, and in environments that intentionally have higher than normal temperatures, like heat spas, and Hot Yoga/Bikram studios. Contact us if your space may be subjected to any of these conditions.

Decorative Grid Strips / Grid Tape
These self adhesive strips/tape are designed to cover up the ceiling grid. Each strip is 2 feet long with an attractive embossed pattern and the grid tape is sold in 100 foot long rolls.

The adhesive on the back is to aid with installation, and IS NOT a permanent adhesive. Small dabs of tile adhesive should be applied to the back of the strips or tape. A small dab at each end, and 2 dabs spaced equally in the middle of the strip are adequate to permanently secure the strip to the ceiling. The ceiling grid tape should have a small dab of adhesive applied every 6 inches. The adhesive backing will allow for the strip to stick to the ceiling long enough for the tile adhesive to cure. Failure to use tile adhesive may result in the failure of the strips or tape to adhere to the ceiling.

Approximately 1 Tube of adhesive per 125 strips (250 linear feet) is needed. We recommend Red Devil General Purpose Construction Adhesive (available here) or Loctite Power Grab All Purpose Adhesive (available locally in most big box stores).

Make sure your grid system is clean before starting application. Rubbing alcohol or 409 work really well to remove any dust or oils.

For best results, make sure the temperature in the room is between 60 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit and low humidity. Do not peel the backing off until you are installing the strip. Any contamination of the back side of the strips will compromise the performance of the adhesive.

Grid Strips
The decorative strips should be butted up to one another. Do not overlap the strips. Make sure to always start at the same end of the strip. You may have to trim each strip slightly, so always put the strip in place before peeling off the backing so you can see if any needs to be trimmed.

Take your first strip. The dot at the end of the strip should be directly over the intersection of the 4 tiles. Once you have the strip lined up, peel the backing from the self adhesive and apply small dabs of tile adhesive to the back of the strip (see above). Run all the strips one direction first.

Finish off by installing the strips that run perpendicular to the tiles. Each strip will need to be trimmed, so keep a pair of scissors or snips in your pocket and cut off the dotted end.

Grid Tape
Start in a corner and work one direction. Apply small dabs of adhesive every 6 inches. Trim the tape to fit when you reach the end of a run. Finish of by covering the remaining cross T's (shorter gid sections). Using the same glueing technique as above. Trim the tape to fit the space exactly. Do not overlap the tape in any areas.

How to Install Glue-Up Ceiling Tiles

Adhesives -vs- Staples
We recommend adhesive when installing our tiles. Although stapling is an option, adhering tiles with adhesive is the recommended method, yielding the most favorable results. (staples can crack the tiles). We recommend "Red Devil General Purpose Construction Adhesive" available here.

Materials: Needed for Installation

  • Ceiling tiles
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil / Wax Pencil
  • Chalk line
  • Straight edge
  • Scissors or Ceiling Tile Aviation Snips
  • Adhesive (about 1 tube for every 8 tiles)
  • Paper towels and water for clean-up
  • Decorative Strips/Grid Tape for Prolite and Designer Series
  • Eye protection

Surface Types and Methods of Installation

Sheetrock, Drywall, Plaster, Cement
Install ceiling tiles directly to ceiling using an approved adhesive. Verify on the adhesive of your choice whether it will work for both the ceiling tile material and the material to which it is to be adhered.

Wood Paneling, Plywood
Install ceiling tiles directly to ceiling using adhesive.

Wood Furring Strips
Furring strips can be used to mount the tiles to. This method is a great solution for ceilings that are not quite perfectly flat and would require a lot of work to fix. Furring strips can be leveled with shims when installing, giving a nice flat area for the tiles to adhere to.

The furring strips should be spaced out the width and length of your tile, minus any overlap that may be required. If you are installing 2x4 tiles, we recommend putting up furring strips in a 2x2 pattern so the middle of the tile has something to adhere to.

Popcorn / Stucco / Cottage Cheese Ceilings
Ceiling tiles should never be applied directly to popcorn ceilings. The ceiling tiles need a flat, even surface to be applied to. There are several ways to create an appropriate surface. You can remove the ceiling texture, add a new layer of drywall over the existing surface, or install furring strips.

If you decide to remove the existing texture, it would be a really good idea to test the material for asbestos before going to work. The process of removing the material is messy and time consuming and depending on your local laws, you may need to have a licensed removal contractor do the work. Please check into it before you start removal.

Before You Begin
Your surface needs to be smooth, clean, and dry. Test out your adhesive and tile combination in a small area before committing to doing the whole ceiling.

Planning Your Layout
Take the time to get the layout right. This will save you many headaches farther along in the project. One of the most important things to know is that not every ceiling tile is exactly 2 "x 2"; or 2' x 4'. We refer to them as this size, and for most American grid systems, the grid is that size. But the tiles have to be a little smaller so they will fit into the grid with a little give around the edges. Be sure to check the size of your tile before laying out your ceiling. Some tiles are 23-5/8" x 23-5/8", some are 23" x 23" and some may be a little more or a little less, depending on the ceiling tile manufacturer.

Knowing the real size and overlap of the tile is very important for direct mounting. You will be creating a grid on the ceiling to keep everything nice and straight. If you are off by only 1/8 of an inch on each tile, after 8 tiles you will be off a whole inch. Be as precise as you can with your measurements.

Once you receive your tiles, lay a few out on the floor and check the size and overlap.

Use grid paper and map out your ceiling. Indicate the position of lights, vents, and any other fixtures or obstructions on the ceiling. The location of these obstacles will determine your layout and overall look of the finished ceiling. Make sure you take the border into consideration when laying out the tile pattern. A larger border is often preferred over a small one.

If the ceiling tile you have chosen has a large amount of relief, you may want to consider the use of a flatter border tile in the spaces where there are lights, vents or other obstructions in the ceiling. Tiles with a large amount of relief may preclude the use of them with confronted with a surface mounted accessory.

Consider the main, most visible area of your space as well as the longest runs of tiles. These are usually the lines you want square to your starting wall. At some point, you will need to pick a wall to start from and use it as the base for your lines, keeping in mind that this wall will most likely not be square with the other walls.

Once your pattern has been decided, use the chalk line to snap your rows. Check that you are keeping your lines square every now and then. Most rooms are not square and many times tile layout is a compromise of room shape and border tile size needs.

Make sure to space your chalk lines according to your type of tile. Some tiles overlap during the installation, so you will have to reduce your line spacing to account for the tile overlap.

Both of these layouts are out of square by the same amount, only the size of the border tiles are different. The right layout shows how much easier it is to spot the imperfection in the alignment. Small border tiles will magnify how out of square a room is as it is easier to compare the true line of the edge of the tile the closer it is to the wall.

Installing the First Tile
Once you are confident in your layout, make sure all your surfaces as well as your hands are clean. Any oils on the ceiling or tiles, even the ones from your skin, can affect the performance of the adhesive. Latex gloves are a great option during the installation process, keeping oils off the tiles, and keeping your hands clean of adhesive.

Take your first tile and apply a bead of adhesive all the way around the perimeter of the backside of the tile. Make the bead 1/8" to 3/16" in size. If the tile center lays flat on the ceiling, add a 4" "X" to the center section with adhesive. If the tile has a design where only a few areas touch the ceiling, place some blobs of adhesive on those features. Keep a towel handy to clean up any adhesive that may seep out.

Gently place the tile close to it's final location next to your chalk lines. Lightly press the tile to the ceiling as you slide it into position. This lets the adhesive spread out and smear around a bit. Once you are satisfied that the tile is in place, firmly press the tile to the ceiling, rubbing out any bumps in the adhesive.

Place the second tile next to your first one. The edges of each tile should just be touching. Don't press the tiles together with force.

Continue placing full sized tiles adjusting as necessary to remain lined up on your grid lines. For non-overlapping tiles, creating a small space between tiles to remain on your layout is ok. These gaps will be covered by Grid Tape or Grid Strips when finished.

Legacy Series, Ceiling Skins
Place the second tile, overlapping the flat lip of the tile over the previous tile by about 1/4". Make sure to mark out your grid with this overlap included.

Put up as many full tiles as you can, saving the tiles that have to be cut to accommodate for fixtures to be installed last.

Border Tiles
Unless you are incredibly lucky, you will have some less than full sized tiles to be placed around the perimeter of the space. We have several tiles that are designed specifically to function as border tiles. They have very small relief and are easily cut with scissors or aviation snips.

Measure the open space from the installed tile to the wall. Make sure to take measurements at each end of the space, as these measurements are often different. Transfer your measurements to your border tile and cut it.

Just like the full size tiles, run a bead of adhesive all the way around the perimeter of the tile and in the center area of the tile as needed. If the border tiles are really small, you may not need to apply any adhesive in the center.

Decorative Strips
These self adhesive strips are designed to cover up the seams between tiles that install with no overlap. Each strip is 2 feet long with an attractive embossed pattern.

The adhesive on the back is to aid with installation, and IS NOT a permanent adhesive. Small dabs of tile adhesive should be applied to the back of the strips. A small dab at each end, and 2 dabs spaced equally in the middle of the strip are adequate to permanently secure the strip to the ceiling. The adhesive backing will allow for the strip to stick to the ceiling long enough for the tile adhesive to cure. Failure to use tile adhesive may result in the failure of the strips to adhere to the ceiling.

Approximately 1 Tube of adhesive per 125 strips (250 linear feet) is needed. We recommend Red Devil General Purpose Construction Adhesive (available here) or Loctite Power Grab All Purpose Adhesive (available locally in most big box stores).

Make sure your tiles are flat and any adhesive that has oozed out between the cracks has been cleaned up. If your tiles have been up for a while, take some time to clean the area that the strips will be applied to.

Look great

The tile are easy to install and what a difference they make in the appearance. Suggestion, if you have old tile you are replacing use them for a little extra weight and insulation. The tape is a little tedious but makes the job look complete. Also the sales staff was terrific and I received my products two days after ordering. Many thanks. Jimmy White/Jimmy White Builders Inc.

Awesome way to cover old framework!

The grid tape was thicker that we expected and went up very easily! It sticks great to the old framework. Remember to use rubbing alcohol to wipe them down first. Looks so good it's hard to tell that it is tape! Way better than replacing or painting the old framework!

Falling down

We loved the idea of the black grid tape for our drop in ceiling tiles that we also purchased here. Unfortunately it isn't sticking to our grid and is falling down every day. However we used it upstairs and it is perfect and never comes down.

grid tape did not stick

I got the product and read the warning that it would not stick if you didn't follow the directions. I followed the directions making sure everything was clean and no tiles installed when i put the tape on the grid. In spite of my precautions within a month the tape was falling off. It did look good.... while it was up.... now looking for options on how to get the tape to stay up

Provides a great finish and easy to apply

My mom's living room looks great with this grid tape and the tiles. It needed a bit more reinforcement in some areas as the heat rising to the ceiling caused some of the tape to loosen. Follow the instructions by making sure you thoroughly clean your grids and tape first! It is worth the extra time.

Not so good

The grid tape is 1" and the grids are 1/2" , even when cutting the tape down to 1/2" the white sides of the grid show. Could not use it, better to paint the grid or paint dark then install tape, but it needs to come in 1/2" size.

Like the look, but not sticky enough

The grid tape looks great, but it keep sagging since the glue is not very permanent. We will need to go over the entire ceiling and try another adhesive to keep it up, but it still gives that finished look we were looking for.

Looks good, but won't hold

Needed an option to cover older, darker colored grid and found this product online. Looks great, but have had large sections of the tape peel off. After 1 month of re-taping most of my grid, I will be ripping it all down and replacing the grid or painting it. Extremely disappointed with it's ability to hold.

We were worried how this would install - but it turned out ok

We had ordered a black and silver tile system and after using the web site to match the best grid color we chose the black. Since our grid was all white we ordered the black tape. We thought this might be a pain to put up, but once you get the hang of it, it goes up pretty well. The tape has a little stiffness to it that really helps align it to the grid system. So it doesn't stretch too thin or bend off the edging too easily, as you lay it up. We cut the cross pieces and installed them first to just fit into and above the long run grid. Then we covered the bottom grid (long run) pieces last. This gave it a nice finished look. If we would have realized it - we would have order the grid system in black.

expensive tape...

looked ok, expensive. looked better with no overlap @ corners, but waaaaaay too much labor. tiles really need extremely flat ceiling to look good. most applications for this product, from a contractors perspective, is to hide an ugly or slightly damaged ceiling to begin with. It makes this a very expensive product to use considering you have to get the ceiling to a finished level before u can install it. product is very flexible and shows all ceiling imperfections. It looked 7/10 from my eye but others loved it...

Applying tape, think ahead.

This was a diy project of a small bathroom. I'm really a beginner, but it wasn't difficult to understand how things were supposed to go together. One thing I discovered was, that the tape doesn't stick well to a painted surface. Before I attached the ceiling tiles to the ceiling, I had painted them. They were too white for the bathroom, and I wanted to paint them with a different color, and it was far easier to paint them on a table, than it was to try and paint them overhead. At first the tape seemed to stick, but after a few days, the tape started to loosen along the edges. I tried resticking, applying more pressure, but after a couple more days it would unstick again. I wanted to paint the tape as well, so it would match the tiles, but I couldn't if I thought it might pull apart. So now, I'm applying the adhesive used to originally put up the tiles. I'll see how that goes, and if the tape sticks I'll be able to go ahead and paint it to match. Long story short, I guess if someone wants to paint the tiles, it's better to wait until the tape has already been applied as well. I think the tape would stick better to unpainted tiles. All in all, I'm satisfied with my project. The other stuff is all just part of the learning curve.

I like the matching tape.

Looks very good. Some spots of the tape seems to bulge a little. Not sure if this is because it was cut a little to tight or the need for more adhesive. Just a little pressure puts it back in place.

A finishing touch

The support struts for our ceiling were off white to begin with and over the years had yellowed some. This look took away from the new Stratford Tiles. The Decorative Tape provided and excellent finishing touch to the project. The only thing to be careful of is that the surface be clean and dry. If they are not clean, the tape may fall off. It is easily pushed backed on, but you can avoid the problem if you just clean the surfaces as you go.

Incredible

We recently had our ceiling re-done with the Pro Ceiling Surface Mount system and the end result is Incredible and Classy. It's a whole new room and it was a breeze for a novice like me. Follow all the instructions on the video like when measuring the borders and you'll have a new look in no time. Cutting the tiles was as simple as could be and the fit perfectly into the grooves. Again- follow the directions guys! It's a genetic disorder we men have in not reading directions but my wife was my guide throughout this process. The finished look is something special and I'm more than happy with our decision to go with pro ceiling. I suggest you put in the Soni Guard Insulation as well- Helps keep the room QUIET and insulated. The Grid Tape finishes the project off with that touch of class and it's very simple- just follow directions and clean it before you tape it! Enjoy your new look and increased value in your home.
